National Selections for the Cannes Young Lions 2013  Competition 
 
Young Lions Competition is the most dynamic part of the Cannes Lions International Creativity Festival. This year, national selections for the competition are organized by “Doğan Burda” (Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity Representative for Turkey) and the Foundation of Advertising (Foundation of Professional Research, Development and Education in Advertising) - “Reklamcılık Vakfı” with the support of Akmerkez, Turkish Association of Advertisers – “Reklamverenler Derneği” and Getty Images. 
 
The competition creates an opportunity for the young creatives, media planners and young marketers to:
 
- participate in one of the world’s most important international competitions, 
- represent their countries and 
- widen their visions.
 
Application procedure and rules:
 

1. The competition is open to all competitors in print, cyber, media and film categories born after 22 June 1984 (28 years or under), who meet the conditions stated below.
2. The competition is open to young marketing professionals from client companies, born after  22 June1982 (30 years or under).
3. The competition will be held in five categories: “Print Category”, (where the competing teams are made up of an art director and a copywriter), “Cyber Category”, (where the teams consist of a web designer and a copywriter), “Film Category” (where the teams are made up of an editor and a copywriter), “Young Marketers” (two young marketers from a client organization) and “Media Category” (media strategists from agencies).
4. The young marketers teams will be expected to produce a brief that would be presented to an advertising agency. Teams will be judged on the clarity of the brief in terms of the level of knowledge about the product or service and the aims of the specific campaign.
5. The media teams will be expected to produce and present an innovative media strategy for the brief.
6. A maximum of 50 teams in the “Print Category”, 40 teams in the “Cyber Category”, 40 teams in the “Film Category”, 25 teams in the “Young Marketers” and 25 teams in the “Media Category” will be accepted. If the number of applications for each section of the competition exceeds maximum number stated, there can be an open draw at the Foundation of Advertising Headquarters.

  • The members of 37 teams in the Print and Film Competitions must be employed in an advertising agency that is a member of the Turkish Association of Advertising Agencies – “Reklamcılar Derneği”. 
  • A total of two competition places are reserved for agencies belonging to Ankara Advertising Association and İzmir Advertising Association. One team, members of which are employed by a member agency of Ankara Advertising Association and one team, members of which are employed by a member agency of İzmir Advertising Association can participate in the Print Category.
  • This year, 3 teams in the Print and Film Competitions that are members of “Reklam Yaratıcıları Derneği” will also be accepted. 
  • Candidates in the Cyber Category must be cyber creatives employed by a company or in an institution. 
  • Previous winners cannot enter the competition category that they have won with the same team member. 
  • Teams competing in print, cyber and media categories are expected to bring their own laptop computers and graphic tablets on the day of the competition. Film category competitors will have to bring their own handheld cameras or cellular phones with built in video cameras on the day of the competition. 
7. The candidates have to fill in the application forms on www.rv.org.tr. As explained in the application form, the candidates have to attach their scanned identification cards (“nüfus cüzdanı”) and the receipt of the participation fee to the application form. 
 
The participation fee (for the Print and Cyber Categories: 200 TL // for the Film Competition: 250 TL // for the Young Marketers: 250 TL // for the Media Categories: 250 TL) has to be sent to:

8. The participation fee will be refunded if there are more applications then stated and the candidate is not chosen at the open draw.
 
9. It is obligatory that at least one member of the team has very good command of English.
 
10. The 1st place team’s visa procedures should be completed within 10 work days. If not, the 2nd place team’s members will have the right to compete in Cannes and they will be expected to complete their visa procedures within 10 days.
 
11. The briefs for the print and cyber categories will be based on a social cause and the client will be an NGO. The NGO may want to use the works of the first, second and third place winners in the two categories. If such is the case the winners will translate their ad’s body copy for NGO’s usage free of charge with all the rights belonging to the NGO. 
 
Important notice:
  • Previous winners cannot enter the competition category that they have won with the same team member.
  • The teams who have taken part in two previous competitions cannot be formed with the same team members a third time. 
The challenge of the “Print Category” is to produce a print ad within 24 hours, while the candidates in the “Cyber Category” have to create a cyber ad within 24 hours. The candidates in the “Film Competition” have 48 hours to shoot and edit a 30 second commercial, filmed entirely on a a handheld camera or a cellular phone. The competitors should make sure that their films can be played on a cellular phone. Young Marketers will have 24 hours to submit their agency briefs. The teams will be judged on the clarity of their brief in terms of the level of knowledge about the product or service and the aims of the specific campaign. They will also be required to produce a presentation, not longer than 9 slides, explaining their brief’s objectives, expected execution and expected results. Each team will have 5 minutes to present their brief to the jury. The Media Category will have 24 hours to submit their media strategy. The competing teams will prepare their submission in the form of a five-minute presentation, not longer than 9 slides.
 
Jury members
 
President of the jury will be Haluk Sicimoğlu for each category and jury members for the categories will be announced later. 
 
Awards:
 
The 1st place team in each category will be entitled to participate in the Young Lions International Competition in Cannes.
 
The five 1st place teams will be invited to the 2013 Cannes Lions International Creativity Festival by Doğan Burda under the sponsorship of Akmerkez. Flight, accommodation costs and registration fees for Cannes Lions Festival will be covered.
